What are Sober Living Homes or SLE's?
A sober living home is a temporary, peer-managed, and substance-free living environment for people who want to recover from addiction and stay sober. Accordingly, residents must follow house rules, attend recovery groups or programs, and participate in household activities. Sober living houses provide peer support, recovery principles, and individual responsibility to help residents prepare to return to their everyday life or live independently.
Sober Living is the lowest level of care. Ideally, clients are coming straight from treatment of 90 days or more. The idea that someone gradually titrates back into life at a digestible rate seems to yield the most positive results.
For many people, their journey starts in an In-Patient Residential setting for 30 days. They are then stepped down and introduced to a little more freedom each month in a PHP or IOP with supportive housing for a couple of months. Once the treatment team deem the client safe to step down even further is when sober living comes into play.
It is recomended that a client do at least 3 months in sober living. On average people stay between 9-12 months.
For those in recovery and beyond, a support system can help keep you on a well-balanced path in a number of ways. Having a substance use disorder and starting recovery might feel isolating, which may affect your relationships with family and friends. Making connections with other people during the recovery process can help define a new chapter in your life. For example, it could be an opportunity to repair any relationships hurt by past substance use. However, some people may have been encouraged to use substances by the people around them, including friends and family. Accordingly, research indicates that substance use — among other health habits — may “spread” through social networks. This is why a healthy support system during recovery can make a world of difference.
When a person finds community and connection, healing begins. The guarded walls come down, they get vulnerable and become part of something bigger than themselves. We believe it is imperative that people find friends with a common interest in recovery. An unshakable bond will usually occur when all of this happens.
